Builder bucks the trend

CONSTRUCTION company TJ Pybus has trebled its turnover and has a positive forward order book despite the downturn.
The Leeds-based residential and commercial construction services company has also increased staff from two to 26 since it was established in October 2006.
TJ Pybus has seen turnover increase from £295,000 at the end of its first year of trading, to £895,000 for the year ended October 2008.
The business has subsequently achieved an average monthly turnover of £150,000 to January 2009 and with a forward order book of £1.4m is set to reach annual turnover of £2m this year.
Founded by Harrogate-born Tom Pybus, TJ Pybus Construction carries out both commercial and residential projects of any scale and specialises in property conversions and renovations.
Explaining the reasons for establishing his company, Mr Pybus, 34, said: “The construction industry was receiving a really bad press.
“Stories of ‘cowboy’ builders were everywhere but I knew this wasn’t representative of the industry as a whole and it certainly wasn’t representative of my own work ethic.
“I decided I wanted to start a business that could be an antidote to the stereotype.”
Mr Pybus is looking to grow the business further by recruiting more staff and is also keen to build new homes. The company recently won its first new home contract.
“I’ve always wanted to do this,” he said. “To be chosen by someone to build their home is a great honour. The team really is looking forward to this challenge and we’re hoping it’ll lead to more new build contracts.”
