The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has just launched a major new campaign backed by the government, to demonstrate the essential role that Apprenticeships play in today’s business world. It aims to highlight how businesses across Yorkshire and the Humber can ensure that their workforce has the skills it needs to grow, whilst illustrating how hiring apprentices can make an organisation more effective, productive and competitive, by addressing skills gaps and harnessing fresh new talent.

Whatever sector you operate in, whether it’s accountancy, engineering, construction, fashion or marketing – today’s Apprenticeships cover an extremely broad spectrum and will ‘make things happen’ for businesses across Yorkshire and the Humber, despite the current economic climate.

Nick Wilson, regional director for the National Apprenticeships Service in Yorkshire and the Humber, comments: “The aim of our campaign is to urge more employers to engage in Apprenticeships and learn more about how they can enable them to nurture a highly skilled and talented workforce – something that is fundamental to their future business productivity and growth.

“With over 180 different Apprenticeships available across 80 different industry sectors, there is an opportunity for all employers to place an apprentice in their organisation.”

The Apprenticeships campaign got underway in the region this month when Sir Alan Sugar, accompanied by Cabinet Ministers, Ed Balls MP and John Denham MP, called on businesses across Yorkshire and the Humber to expand the number of programmes on offer.

lscThe event at the Royal Armouries explored the business benefits of employing apprentices in the current economic climate. Over 500 employers attended the event and received an overview of all the wider changes taking place in education and training, giving them compelling evidence of how investing in apprentices can benefit their business during the downturn and beyond.

Sir Alan Sugar, commenting at the event, said: “Success is all about finding the right people to make your business grow – especially in these challenging times. We wanted as many employers to come along as possible today, so they could find out how apprentices are real doers, making things happen and helping businesses grow and thrive.”

Apprenticeships can provide the following significant benefits for employers in the region:

  • Stay strong in the recession – Apprenticeships ensure that the workforce has the skills it needs in order to remain competitive, especially in these difficult economic circumstances.
  • Improve productivity – Because apprentices receive relevant hands-on training, they can have an immediate effect and make a real and more meaningful contribution to a business.
  • Motivate the workforce – As a result of their training, apprentices are highly motivated and eager to know more. The extra responsibility also makes them feel more valued and they are easier to retain in the long term.
  • Give relevant training – Apprenticeships provide your workforce with high levels of expertise that’s not only specific to that industry, but also directly relevant to that particular business.
  • Avoid skills shortages – Apprenticeships can help the workforce master the latest techniques to fill skills gaps created by new advances and insure against those that are likely to arise.
