Planners predict 1,000 new jobs at Thoresby Colliery site

How the site might look

The planning consultants responsible for securing planning permission for the redevelopment of the Thoresby Colliery site says that as many as 1,000 jobs could be created when the development is complete.

Pegasus Group says that the Harworth scheme, which will provide 800 new homes, a strategic employment site, country park, local centre with leisure and recreation facilities, a primary school and green space, could create two-and-a-half times as many jobs as the 400 lost when Thoresby Colliery closed in 2015.

Steve Lewis-Roberts, director from Pegasus’s East Midlands, said: “The proposed scheme will be a high-quality development next to Sherwood Forest. We will now be working with Newark and Sherwood District Council to deliver the mixed use development over the next 10 years.

“The first phase of residential land, for about 150 homes, is expected to be ready for sale to housebuilders as serviced plots towards the end of 2018.

“Harworth Group will retain some of the former colliery buildings, including a 20,000 sq ft workshop and four other units to be used as shops and community facilities. More jobs will be created in the business park, which would be located at the front of the site with direct access off the A6075 and aimed at small and medium-sized companies.”
