New jobs to be created as Derby joinery moves to 18,000 sq ft factory

A historic Derby firm specialising in bespoke joinery is set to create over 20 jobs with a move to new premises.

Support from the Derby Enterprise Growth Fund (DEGF) has helped enabled Seamers Specialist Joinery to secure a 1.2-acre land purchase and 18,000 sqft factory development at Victory Park in Derby. The new manufacturing facility will help ensure the company continues to expand and create new jobs.

J Seamer & Son is a family joinery business established in 1875 by John Seamer. The move has been instigated by managing director Richard Latham who joined the company as an apprentice joiner in 1981, and took control of the company four years ago.

He said: “The time was right for Seamers to expand, the DEGF grant and loan enabled us to complete a funding package that made the move a reality. The new premises will house a wide range of specialist equipment which will be operated by a highly skilled workforce. We are very excited about the impact the move will have on the company and our future prospects as a local employer.”

Derby City Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration & the Economy, councillor Martin Rawson, said: “Our funding scheme is one of the most successful of its type in the country. In this case, it has been able to help secure the future of a company with a long history in Derby. The Council has been delighted to use the Fund to stimulate employment opportunities for local people.”
