BID secures £10,000 for street entertainment

The Live Rebel Choir

St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) has secured a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery Awards for All – Big Lottery Fund to fund this year’s free street entertainment programme in the area.

The BID successfully applied for the funding to support the St Peters Quarter Live programme which will feature eight events over the coming nine months as part of the wider BID programme to animate the streets and encourage more people into the heart of the city centre.

The full St Peters Quarter Live programme is currently being finalised following feedback from local businesses who attend the BID’s monthly meetings across the area who are keen to get involved in promoting and supporting the events.

The first event will be held on the Spot on Saturday April 14 between 11am and 3pm – featuring local music groups.

Helen Wathall, chair of the St Peters Quarter Board, said: “We are delighted to have secured funding for St Peters Quarter Live which has been a popular part of the BID programme since the re-launch last April.

“Free street entertainment in events spaces such as the Spot, St Peters Cross and Riverlights provides an animated feel and extra vibrancy to the area – driving footfall and return visits.

“It is therefore an important part of our programme to improve the St Peters Quarter BID area and encourage people back into this bustling part of the city centre.”

Acts on April 14 include Derby’s Rebel Women’s Choir who are based at Derby Women’s Centre and have a repertoire of inspiring songs of sisterhood, women’s protest and women’s rebellion.

They will be joined by four-part harmony chorus Ignite UK from Belper, fresh from their first competition in Ireland when they won a bronze medal and local community choir The Silver Tones who have a light-hearted repertoire of old favourites.
