New development could create 500 jobs in Salford

LPC LIVING has gained detailed planning approval for a new mixed-use scheme on the site of the former Radclyffe school at Ordsall in Salford which could bring around 500 new jobs to the area.

The firm, which is owned by Pervaiz Naviede,  was given planning approval for the scheme, which includes a 156-bed Travelodge hotel, a 50,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket, 11 new retail units equating to around 25,000 sq ft of space and 114 new homes.

Approval for the scheme was granted by Salford City Council last night. Construction of the new Morrisons is due to start next month, followed by Travelodge in January 2011. Liverpool based architectural firm Falconer Chester Hall has designed the scheme.

Simon Ashdown, development director at LPC Living said: “We are delighted to have secured planning for the whole development site now, particularly as we have signed up two national brands proving there is a commercial appetite in this area despite a continuing difficult economic climate.

“Although it’s early days we’ve also had strong interest in the smaller retailer units from businesses attracted by the site which is located on one of the busiest routes into the city centre and just 500m from MediaCity:UK.

“With the BBC moving to their new base in 2011, Salford Quays is rapidly gaining national significance. However, it is vital that the outlying areas to MediaCity:UK benefit directly from the investment that is being brought into the area and development such as this needs to respond and positively impact on local training and employment opportunities and significantly improve  community facilities.”

Both Morrisons and Travelodge have pledged to recruit staff from the local area and will be hosting interviews around six months ahead of the project’s completion, which is scheduled for Spring 2011.

Tony O’Brien, Travelodge’s UK development director said:  “We are extremely pleased to have secured planning permission at such a key site in Salford Quays.

“Travelodge will be a great addition to Salford, by providing affordable accommodation for the many leisure and business visitors it receives, from the Lowry Centre to the forthcoming BBC building.

The Radclyffe Park development forms part of the wider regeneration of Ordsall. LPC Living said that it had poured in £150m of private investment to deliver new affordable housing, improved facilities and a better environment for residents.
