BIRMINGHAM born singer and actress Toyah Willcox is to be the guest speaker at a women’s networking event in the city.

Ms Willcox, who has had eight top 40 singles and released 18 albums during her career, has accepted an invitation to be guest speaker at Birmingham Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Women Who….’ annual lunch.

The singer is expected to talk about her long career in the entertainment sector which has spanned the period between punk rock and I’m a Celebrity…

The chamber said it was delighted to have secured her services for the prestigious event.

In a statement, the business organisation said: “Toyah is particularly passionate about education, and proudly ‘waves the banner’ for women in the world of business and entertainment.

“Two years ago she took part in the ‘Great Walk to Beijing’ to raise money for fellow singer Olivia Newton-John’s cancer charity.

“She is also a well known actress – she began her career at the Old Rep drama school in Birmingham and she has appeared in a variety of roles, from Shakespearian plays to the Rocky Horror Show.”

On screen roles have seen her appear in films such as ‘Jubilee’ and ‘Quadrophenia’, and her many TV roles have included ‘Quatermass’ and ‘Minder’.

Away from the world of entertainment, she made headlines in 2002 when she fronted a successful protest against plans to site a centre for asylum seekers next to the Worcestershire village of Throckmorton.

The ‘Women Who…’ event takes place on January 28 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Birmingham city centre.
