People: EY makes director hire; Contractor invests in new Birmingham base; and more

Gurbinder Mattoo has joined EY’s private client service team in the Midlands, as the firm looks to grow its offering to private clients across the region.

Mattoo is a director based in EY’s Birmingham office, who has more than 13 years of experience working with private clients in the Midlands, including entrepreneurs and family business owners, as well as individuals working cross-border such as non-domiciles.

In this role, Mattoo will support private clients by offering specialist personal tax advice to help them make informed decisions that consider all the complexities related to frequently changing tax laws. As an example the significant announcements made last Autumn in respect of Entrepreneurs’ Relief (ER) and subsequently the recent clarifications from HM Revenue & Customs.

ER is a valuable relief, which, when available, reduces the capital gains tax rate to 10% on a disposal of business assets. The relief has a number of qualifying conditions that must be met and amendments to these were announced, some of which take effect in relation to disposals on or after 29 October or from 6 April 2019 and so will have an impact on certain shareholders.

Mattoo said: “I am very proud to be joining EY’s private client services team in the Midlands and look forward to helping our clients navigate the increasingly complex tax landscape. We can help clients to understand the law and deliver strategies that are fit for purpose.”

Linda Marston-Weston, EY’s head of tax in the Midlands, said: “Gurbinder brings invaluable experience and knowledge of the local market to the team during a period of continuing change in the personal tax world. The Midlands has a wealth of fantastic opportunities, is home to some outstanding businesses and private clients, and Gurbinder’s appointment reaffirms EY’s commitment to driving growth and strengthening our brand in the local market.”
