Poundland founder to revamp old Woolworths store

RECRUITMENT is under way for a new household goods stores in Telford to replace the closed Woolworths unit.
The co-founder of Poundland Dave Dodd is planning to open one of his new ‘hub’ shops in Telford Shopping Centre and is currently looking for a store manager, deputy manager and sales and floor staff.
The 10,000sq ft store in Telford Shopping Centre sits in an area of reasonable footfall, near to the entrance to the centre from the town’s main bus station.
Hub spokeswoman Julia Miller said: “We will be employing in excess of 30 people and there will be a further announcement about an apprenticeship scheme in due course. We plan to be open late August.
“They don’t want the store to have a ‘cheap’ image, more contemporary and fresh but at the same time offering value for money.”
Alongside household and hardware goods, the shop will sell stationery, camping gear and outdoor goods such as barbecues.
But Ms Miller said the firm’s management would consider selling any items they felt offered the right value to customers.
Originally from Wolverhampton, Mr Dodd has lived near Telford for the past 20 years.
He led a management buyout of Poundland in 2002 and eventually left the company in 2006.
It was sold to private equity firm Warburg Pincus in May for a reported £200m.
A second hub store is likely to open in Manchester’s Arndale Centre although this will not happen until several weeks after the Telford opening with no further details available from the company at this stage.
