Fresh sensation at Villa as Agbonlahor quits

IN another sensational development at Aston Villa, club captain Gabby Agbonlahor has announced he is quitting as club captain.

The player, who was under suspension for allegedly being at a party were legal highs were in evidence, broke the news on his Instagram account this afternoon.

The striker has been the target of the fans’ wrath in recent weeks, which came to a head two weeks ago when he was apparently photographed in the media at a party on the day the club’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed. The player was already under suspension for apparently being unfit to play.

His statement said: “I want to begin with an apology to all Aston Villa fans for my actions in recent weeks, especially at a time when it is devastating for everyone involved with the club.

“I am stepping down as club captain with immediate effect as I do not deserve to carry out such a role anymore. This role was a huge honour to me and it hurts to have lost it.

“I have spent 16 years at Aston Villa and played some memorable games. My celebrations and passion, especially in games against local rivals shows my loyalty to Aston Villa.

“I am asking Aston Villa fans for forgiveness as I’m hurting as well despite reports and photos in the press making out otherwise. I agree my performances this season have not been good enough but I will be working hard to make things right! Up The Villa, Villa Till I Die!”

The club responded with a statement of its own, saying that the latest investigation into his conduct had ended.

“The player has received a substantial fine and been reminded of his responsibilities as a professional footballer at Aston Villa,” said the statement.

“His suspension is now lifted and he will be available for selection from Monday.
“Gabby has also advised he wishes to relinquish the role of Club captain.”

Several fans have called for his to be replaced as captain by Stiliyan Petrov, who has begun training with the club following a four year battle with cancer.

The 36-year-old Bulgarian was forced to quit the game after being diagnosed with acute leukaemia but his health has now improved sufficiently for him to consider returning to the professional game.

Fans have said he would be a tremendous role model for others and his fighting spirit is exactly what the club needs in its current predicament.
