Suit you sir! 7 tips from a tailor

It is all well and good wearing your tailored suit to important meetings, date nights with the other half and your daughter’s graduation. But when it comes to maintaining a tailored suit so it will last you longer than a handful of occasions, there are certain actions you need to make. Scott Caddick, the man behind tailor specialists Colmore Tailors, told us what the most important things are.

Dry cleaning
Scott explained that the key here is to barely get your tailored suits dry cleaned. He said: “When it comes to dry cleaning, less is more. Twice a year is more than enough because the chemicals used in dry cleaning can destroy the fibres of the suit.”

Give them a brush
A good clothes brush can do the world of good for your suit. Scott said: “Brush your suit at the end of each day to keep them clean and fresh and it is the best thing to use to get rid of stains instead of sending it off to get dry cleaned.”

Good hangers are essential
According to Scott, a good coat hanger is really important for a tailored suit as you want to keep them sat up right and structured so they don’t start getting a little soft around the edges. Scott said: “A coat hanger with good shoulder support is ideal.”

Cedarwood is your friend
To keep moths away, cedarwood rings are the best thing to own. Cedarwood rings simply attach to your coat hanger. Scott said: “They keep the moths away and keeps your suit smelling fresh for when you next wear it.”

Rotate!
See your suits as a spinning wardrobe and don’t wear your suit 2 days in a row, especially if they are wool as it needs time to rest and regain shape after each wear. Scott said: “Rotate your suits and try to leave enough time for certain ones to rest between wears.”

Not every colour is your colour
You may love light greys and salmon shades, but they can wash you out. Scott said: “You’re not going to look good in every colour, accept it and work on the shades that you work best.” Scott recommended that If you have dark hair, you’ll look much better in darker colours but if you have light hair, you should wear a lighter coloured suit.

Day to night wear
If you’re going from the office to drinks after work, you need to wear a suit that will last you all that time and won’t begin to feel uncomfortable. Scott said: “For day to night, stick to wool. If you’re wearing a suit for 12-14 hours, there is a fabric called Fresco and that fights creases really well.”
