Coffee shop full of beans after high-profile Birmingham letting

AN independent coffee house which only opened its first shop two years ago is taking over a high-profile site in Birmingham city centre.

Damascena is the new tenant of 5-7 Temple Row West, which overlooks St Philip’s Cathedral. The property was previously the Lisa Shepherd hair salon, next door to the Old Joint Stock.

The coffee shop’s new premises comprise 1,752 sq ft of café space, together with a 1,000 sq ft basement. It has signed a 10-year lease and is set to open in January next year, almost 12 months after the salon was vacated.

Ed Purcell, of the Birmingham office of Cushman & Wakefield, said the letting was a sign of Damascena’s ambitions.

“Damascena have established themselves as one of Birmingham’s leading Independent coffee operators. Their attractive fit out, selection of period properties, and their food and beverage menu, sets them out from your typical bland coffee chain. This has made them a huge success,” he said.

Damascena was founded in 2014 in Moseley. The shop also has a delicatessen and its speciality is food from the Middle East, hence its name, which derived from Damascus, the oldest city in the world.
