Prime city centre apartment scheme sells out ahead of completion

THE current strength of Birmingham city centre’s residential market has been illustrated again with the announcement that a prime development of new apartments has been fully-let even before the scheme is complete.

The scheme, by EDG Property and LaSalle Investment Management, has seen the creation of 19 high specification one and two-bedroomed apartments at New Street Chambers on New Street.

Part of their appeal is that the flats are just seconds away from Birmingham’s Grand Central and the forthcoming Paradise Birmingham, which will adjoin Victoria Square.

New Street Chambers is EDG Property’s first Private Rented Sector (PRS) scheme and director Neil Edginton said the development was an exciting addition to the company’s growing portfolio.

He said: “New Street Chambers offers a unique residential opportunity in the heart of Birmingham and our faith in the project has been borne out by the incredible response we have received that saw each of the apartments let before the project was completed.”

EDG Property worked with Warwick-based architects Corstorphine + Wright on the 20,000 sq ft project, that saw the transformation of a vacant suite of first and second floor offices into some of the city’s most desirable city centre apartments.

Retaining the building’s Victorian character, each apartment was fitted with high specification kitchens and bathrooms, and feature open plan living space and inset bay windows with views along New Street.

New Street Chambers is one of a number of projects that has seen EDG Property breathe new life into some of Birmingham’s historic buildings. The firm recently won a coveted RIBA award for its transformation of a former Victorian school in Harborne into a successful mixed-use development.

Neil Edginton, director, EDG Property EDG Property was also awarded RIBA’s Client of the Year award and Mr Edginton (pictured) said the projects his firm was working on reflected a desire to create exciting and innovative developments where others may not necessarily see the opportunity.

He said: “Birmingham is blessed with a so many fantastic heritage buildings, many of which are either no longer fit for purpose or are in desperate need of some imagination to reinject some lasting value and bring them back into long term use.

“New Street Chambers is a great example of a really high quality building where we have been able to create something really memorable and the early interest and subsequent lettings validate our confidence in the scheme and hopefully reflect our growing reputation as a developer that is trying to bring something original to the market.

“This is our first project which we have developed specifically to rent as it is such a key site in the heart of the city and we are actively looking for further opportunities as we believe there is a strong market in Birmingham for this kind of development.”
