A business support initiative in Bradford city centre has been highly commended in the prestigious Enterprising Britain Awards.

The Bradford City Centre Growth Scheme, which  has created almost 600 full time equivalent jobs and supported 221 businesses, was entered in to the “Improving the Business Environment” category.

Applicants were invited to show how they had made a significant and positive change in their approach towards supporting and promoting enterprise in the last two years.

The five categories that the judges evaluated against were originality; impact on the local or wider economy; improvement of local stakeholder relations; transferability and impact on business growth and scale up.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, of Bradford Council, said “Many businesses have received support via capital grants for building works and equipment purchases as well as business rates rebates, allowing them to open a new venture or expand their business and take on more staff which has further benefited the wider city centre economy.”

Kersten England, Chief Executive of Bradford Council, is the lead chief executive for innovation and growth in the Leeds City Region and will be speaking about her career path, experiences of working in the public sector and how businesses can improve diversity in the workplace at the event on Friday October 13 at Bibis Italianissimo in Leeds.
