Racecourse unveils £1.8m development

A new suite for racehorse owners and trainers which doubles as a wedding, conference and corporate venue is now open at Thirsk Racecourse following a £1.8m investment.

Named The Chestnut Room, after the trees that border the east side of the racecourse, the standalone 4,750 sq ft building benefits from floor to ceiling glazing, TV screens, bar area, as well as kitchen and catering facilities.

The facility can accommodate up to 250 seated dining guests or around 350 in a theatre style layout.

Almost 200 guests attended a black-tie dinner to celebrate the launch which was hosted by Ed Chamberlin.

The sports broadcaster previously presented Premier League football on Sky Sports, before becoming ITV Racing’s lead presenter last year.

Chamberlin said: “This is one of the best owner and trainer facilities in the country.  I can’t think of a better one, it really is awesome.  Thirsk Racecourse is a special place and it’s now certainly an ambition to bring ITV Racing here.”

James Sanderson, manager and clerk of the course at Thirsk Racecourse, said: “We’re delighted to complete work on The Chestnut Rooms, following a 12-month construction project and a significant financial investment.  The new building is part of our ongoing drive to enhance the experience that we offer to both owners and trainers, in order to make racing as competitive as possible at Thirsk.

“In recent years we’ve invested heavily in our non-racing business and now regularly host weddings, balls, dinners, functions and conferences, for organisations ranging from the NHS to small, medium and large corporate firms, and can easily accommodate between 20 and 350 guests.  Many of these clients are attracted by our close proximity to the A1 and the extensive parking we can offer, which is a welcome alternative to most town and city centre hotels.

“The opening of The Chestnut Room now puts us firmly at the forefront of the market in North Yorkshire, as we can accommodate so many people in a variety of flexible layouts in such contemporary surroundings.  It’s immediately proving popular, with several bookings already secured in the last few days alone, which makes it a really exciting time for both our business and the racecourse.  Our investment will also really help to put Thirsk on the map as an exceptional destination for racing and entertaining.”
