Engineering firm secures education contract on £45m sports hub project

Engineering specialist SES Engineering Services has secured a new multi-million pound contract to work alongside main contractor, Galliford Try, on a £45m sports hub for Leeds Beckett University.

SES’ York office has been appointed to design and install a full range of building services on the university’s new build Carnegie Teaching and Research Building, which will house its Carnegie School of Sport at the Headingley campus.

The Carnegie School of Sport will allow the university to combine its specialised teaching and research laboratories as well as deliver a hub for athletes and sports and industry partners.

The building will also include a hypoxic laboratory, a health and wellbeing studio, an indoor 60m sprint track for performance training and analysis, a roof walker track and terrace, and an strength and conditioning space, as well as changing and recovery facilities.

SES has secured this latest contract win due to its ability to work in tandem with main contractors during the bidding stages and work to BIM Level 2.

Steve Joyce, SES’ business director North and Scotland, said: “Having recently had the privilege of working with Galliford Try on a number of complex higher education facilities, such as the award-winning refurbishment of the University of Leeds’ world-class School of Chemical and Process Engineering, we have amassed a great deal of knowledge and experience of the sector.

“To be involved with such an innovative building as the Carnegie Teaching and Research Building further cements our excellent working relationship with the contractor. It also presents a further opportunity for SES to demonstrate its BIM Level 2 experience to great effect.”

Sean Sweet, Galliford Try’s project director, added: “We have a successful track record of delivering innovative buildings in the higher education sector. This would not be achievable were it not for our ability to bring together such a formidable and highly experienced team of project partners, who work with us to execute logistically challenging schemes.

“We are delighted to be able to support the university to deliver its vision for creating world-class facilities for its undergraduates, post graduate and research programmes and the elite athletes who tap into its performance expertise.”

Construction of the teaching and research facility is due for completion in Autumn 2019 and the project is part of a £200m investment the university has planned across its campuses.
