Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme is driving growth agenda

DYNAMIC small firms from across the region are being sought for the latest wave of a unique growth programme led by Goldman Sachs.

Businesses or social enterprises interested in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses initiative can apply by clicking here.

Fully funded by the Goldman Sachs Foundation, 10,000 Small Businesses is a practical programme designed to help the leaders of established small businesses and social enterprises define and achieve their growth aspirations.

It equips delegates with tools and support to overcome a range of obstacles and lay the foundation for long-term sustainable growth and job creation.

This week in our 10,000 Small Businesses supplement, which can be downloaded here – TheBusinessDesk.com will be highlighting the experiences of some of the Yorkshire firms that have taken part by sharing their growth stories.

The supplement looks at some of the areas considered important to bolstering small business growth, such as networking and peer learning opportunities and the new ideas, knowledge and skills which are generated through the process.

10,000 Small Businesses is based on a programme Goldman Sachs launched in the US in 2009, and is delivered through a network of local partners who combine relevant academic expertise and extensive experience working with the owners and leaders of small businesses.

In Yorkshire that partner is Leeds University Business School. The programme, launched in Leeds in 2010, brings together cohorts of up to 30 entrepreneurs in Yorkshire, the North West, the Midlands and most recently in London.

Professor Nigel Lockett, academic lead at Leeds University Business School, said it was vital to have a vibrant SME community in the UK.

Prof Lockett said: “An Experian report in 2010 identified SMEs to have a hugely significant impact on employment and economic recovery.

“The programme provides support to entrepreneurs to enable this to continue and grow.”

And his colleague Jacinta Elliott, programme director of 10,000 Small Businesses at Leeds University Business School, added: “There is an extraordinary magic that happens when we have entrepreneurs in a room, working together and building on each other’s ideas.”

Leeds University Business School has organised two events, taking place on April 25 and June 11, for people interested in taking part in the programme. They are both being held at the offices of law firm Pinsent Masons in Leeds at 6pm.
