Meadowhall Metropolitan ‘on track’

PLANS to develop land around the Meadowhall Shopping Centre remain on track despite the downturn, a leading figure at the site has said.

British Land has outline planning permission to build around 1m sq ft of offices, 1,300 homes and a hotel on a 60 acre site it owns near Meadowhall in South Yorkshire.

The scheme is known as Meadowhall Metropolitan.

Meadowhall, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next month, is jointly owned by British Land and London & Stamford Properties.

Darren Pearce, Meadowhall Centre director, told TheBusinessDesk.com that the resumption of development work at the Trinity Leeds scheme, led by Land Securities and Caddick, showed an increasing confidence in the sector.

However, Mr Pearce said there was no date set for the start of work at Meadowhall Metropolitan.

Mr Pearce said organisations with interest in the development were working together on the masterplan for the Lower Don Valley area.

“Trinity Leeds and Eastgate (Hammerson’s mixed-use development in Leeds) shows that developers and property owners are willing to move forward on these schemes,” Mr Pearce said.

“We’re ready to go here but clearly it’s something we need to move forward with and stack up.”

Earlier this year, British Land said although the company was cash rich, building the scheme speculatively would not be the best way forward for the scheme.
