Leeds group to recruit 3,000 after winning £120m deal

100 jobs will be created in Leeds after language services company thebigword signed a £120m deal with the Ministry of Justice to provide interpretation services.

In total, more than 3,500 language experts will be recruited alongside the new support staff at its headquarters after the Leeds-based company signed the deal which they described as “the biggest interpreting contract in Europe”.

thebigword also won a £60m central Government contract back in May, and expanded to Japan last year. In June 2015 thebigword announced plans to float on the London Stock Exchange before it’s 40th birthday.

The company was founded 35 years ago and today it has a client list which includes 80% of the Fortune 100, works in 235 languages, and employs more than 550 people in 11 offices around the world.

Last year the company returned annual revenues of £47m,with ambitious plans to nearly quadruple that figure to £175m by 2018-19.

Chief executive of thebigword, Larry Gould, says: “This is a fantastic deal for thebigword and further cements our position as the largest interpreting services provider in Europe. We have people and offices on every continent and we will continue to push for contracts like this in the private and public sectors as we continue to grow the business.”

Thebigword will provide face-to-face, telephone interpreting and translations to the Ministry of Justice in the UK.

Its linguists will work with organisations across the Justice System, including HM Courts and Tribunals Service, National Probation Service, Crown Prosecution Service and HM Prison Service.
