My Yorkshire: Louise Howard-Long, Architect Salon

Louise Howard-Long is the owner of Architect Salon in Headingley.

Where do you live/where are you from?
I live in Roundhay and love it – so close to the park! I was born in Leeds, lived in Aberford and Selby as a child and then back to Leeds again, with brief forays to Manchester and London

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
I love the Dales, but I love Staithes in winter- the isolation and lack of mobile reception!

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
I need to get a table at The Man Behind the Curtain!

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
Tasting menu at The Pheasant at Harome – it was ages ago but was just fabulous!

What is your most Yorkshire trait?
I call people “love”.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.
Leeds is the greenest city in Europe

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
David Hockney, Jarvis Cocker and Gary Verity

First experience of Yorkshire (for non-Yorkshire folk)
Leeds… it’s shopping, eating, nightlife and culture will get rid of any flat cap and whippet ideas!

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
I hate parochial local television that defines coming from Yorkshire in terms of thick flat capped tykes eating Yorkshire pudding whilst petting their whippets!

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
The attitude of Manchester towards arts and music.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?
They’re not really overrated, but we really should have a decent football team somewhere in the county!
