On the move: the latest East Midlands hires

Barbara Matthews

A senior executive who was awarded an MBE for Services to the Arts has been appointed as the new head of the College of Art, Architecture, Design and Humanities and pro vice-chancellor (culture) at Nottingham Trent University.

Barbara Matthews, currently pro vice-chancellor and dean of arts, design and humanities at De Montfort University, will take up her new position on 23 January and lead the development and delivery of the university’s cultural strategy in collaboration with partners in the region.

Until joining De Montfort University in 2013, Matthews’ career was within the cultural sector. She held a number of executive level positions, managing a wide range of people, organisations and agendas.

As well as working at a number of theatre companies, she was a director at Arts Council England, where she led the council’s theatre policy and the strategy that informed an annual investment of more than £100m.

At De Montfort University she has developed productive relationships with the creative industries, identifying opportunities for collaboration and increasing the university’s contribution to the cultural life of Leicester.

Matthews said: “I am greatly looking forward to joining Nottingham Trent University in January and getting to know my new colleagues. I am excited by the ambition of the university’s new strategy and the opportunity to work with the cultural organisations and artists within the city.”
