2016 in review: Nigel Baxter, RH Commercial Vehicles

Nigel Baxter, managing director at RH Commercial Vehicles, looks back at a significant 12 months for himself and his business.

What has been your highlight of the year?
After campaigning hard for Business for Britain which was affiliated to Vote Leave, watching the sun come up on 24th June after one of most extraordinary nights in the history of our fabulous country, was the definite highlight. Despite the continued lack of respect in some corners of this democratic decision, I truly believe that we will see – or are already seeing – the benefits of the UK taking back control of its own destiny politically. In terms of business, I am delighted by the result and proud to have played a small part in what was a small group that took on and ultimately beat the establishment.

Closer to home, seeing RH Commercial Vehicles – only reacquired in 2012 – really start to ‘motor’ in 2016 and hit all our sales targets with Renault Trucks and develop our truck leasing and rental business has been a highlight. The continued success of our apprentices and seeing young people grow and blossom with us will always be a highlight as well.

And your lowlight?
On the theme of Brexit, the continued denial of the result in some quarters is a lowlight. We are fortunate to live in a democracy and there are always winners and losers in any argument. We are all Brexiteers now and we all need to make the most of the huge opportunities in front of us and get behind our Prime Minister to do so.

How do you think 2016 will be remembered?
2016 has been quite remarkable. I certainly cannot remember more news in any one year including the rise of what some would call ‘populism’ across the world. It’s not finished yet – 2017 will also provide its shocks of that I am sure – but 2016 could well be the defining years of this century. Only time will tell.

Hero of the year (business or otherwise)?
Trump, Farage or even Boris – take your pick.

And villain?
Some would say Donald Trump, Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage but for me it is Richard Branson. Britain made his fortune so he needs to talk us up and not down.

What’s your New Year’s Resolution?
I am not one for resolutions but after a very busy 2016 a long holiday is on the wish list.
