Logged-off: Peter Jenkins, Sun Hat Villas & Resorts

Peter Jenkins

We find out how the managing director of Lincoln-based Sun-hat Villas & Resorts unwinds at the weekend.

How do you relax at the weekend?
Because there is always so much happening at work and there is a lot of travel involved, it’s important to make sure that I take time to relax and spend quality time with my family. My favourite thing to do is to go along and watch my son play football (watch out Gareth Bale!). In the evening I love to spend time dining with my friends.

How many hours do you work at the weekend on average?
As much as I like to unwind at the weekend, I still need to dedicate some time to Sun-hat. It’s important to me that I have strong relationships with our customers and that means being available when needed – plus, let’s face it, it’s really hard to switch off.

What’s your favourite…
Holiday destination? It may sound an obvious answer, as the majority of Sun-hat’s villas are based in the Algarve, but it is honestly my favourite place to get away from it all. I believe that the most successful businesses are based on a passion, and the Algarve and its wonderful resorts truly are my passion.

Book? I couldn’t put down Pillars of the Earth. Ken Follett is a master storyteller and draws you in with a magical combination of vividly complex characters, romance, intrigue and action, all set in a phenomenally imagined 12th century England. He describes the setting in such intricate detail that you feel as if you are right there watching this glorious gothic masterpiece of a cathedral being built.

Album? I had not long started secondary school when David Bowie released Hunky Dory, and it had a profound effect on me and my musical education. Here was a record that celebrated difference, youth, uncertainty – themes that really resonated with me and my classmates.

Food? I adore fish and seafood, but it really does have to be incredibly fresh to be at its best. When I eat fish, for example, it must have the head on so that I can see the eye and eat the cheek meat.

TV programme? I am totally enthralled by Game of Thrones. I’m ashamed to admit that there are a number of us in the Sun-hat office who devour each episode as it’s released and annoy those who haven’t watched it as yet by discussing the latest twists and turns in the plot.

Website or app? I am constantly on Whatsapp. It is just so easy to use, whilst being truly useful. My family have quickly learnt that I tend to respond quicker to Whatsapp messages than to any other contact method!

How do you usually spend Sunday evenings?
I do try and keep Sunday evenings just for the family – my wife and nine year-old-son. We’ll maybe watch a film or we enjoy playing cards or board games together.
