Plans for homeless hostel in Nottingham regeneration zone

Portland House

Student accommodation in the major regeneration zone in Nottingham city centre could be turned into a hostel for homeless people.

Lago Estates wants to convert the current student accommodation in Portland House, Carrington Street into a hostel that would be run by the YMCA.

The application site includes floors 1-4 of Portland House, together with the narrow section of the ground floor of the building and part of the basement area.

A statement from Nottinghamshire YMCA said: “Nottinghamshire YMCA will deliver support to clients aged 18 – 65 who are either homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness.

“Our clients require support managing a tenancy and dealing with social, emotional and learning difficulties and support to make positive life choices. The service will not be offered in perpetuity; nor is there a fixed term set at the commencement of service.

“Our strategic goal is to support each individual client and ensure they develop and retain essential skills required to live independently in no longer than two years. When the client has demonstrated their capacity to successfully manage a tenancy and have met their identified support need goals, they will transition into settled independent accommodation.”
