£19.3m Silverstone visitor attraction delayed after contractor collapses

The collapse of construction contractor Shaylor Group is set to delay the opening of the £19.3m Silverstone Experience, TheBusinessDesk.com understands.

The visitor attraction was supposed due for completion on 9 July. The Silverstone Experience was set to be housed within the only remaining Second World War Wellington Bomber hangar at the entrance to the iconic Silverstone Circuit. The hangar has been refurbished and extended to create a 43,000 sq ft space.

However, Walsall-based Shaylor slipped into administration last Friday (14 June) with 200 employees made redundant. Administrators from FRP Advisory said the company has been affected by “severe cashflow pressures”.

A spokesperson for the Silverstone Experience told TheBusinessDesk.com: “The Silverstone Experience was just two weeks away from practical completion when Shaylor Group went into administration, so whilst this means there will be a short-term delay to our public opening, the project is not in doubt.

“We are talking directly to the sub-contractors and will work with the administrator on transfer of the site from Shaylor Group.”

The joint administrators are now in discussions with Shaylor’s clients regarding the transfer of sites and are supporting those affected by the closure of the business. A small number of employees at the head office in Walsall have been retained to support the administration process.
