Derbyshire County Council has approved funding for a £15 million care home in the village of Cotmanhay.

A planning application has been submitted for the 40-bed care home on the site of the former Bennerley Fields School, which would eventually replace the Hazelwood Home for Older People, Cotmanhay’s current care facility.

The development could include 66 extra care apartments and 18 bungalows for over-55s, plus a sports pitch and community café.

Designs for the new development have been drawn up by architects Glancy Nicholls, and if planning permission is granted, building work could begin in March 2020.

Councillor Jean Wharmby, cabinet member for adult care, said: “Despite the budget restraints we, and other councils face, we remain committed to helping older people lead dignified and fulfilled lives.

“Working with our partners, we want to create purpose-built, modern accommodation which will meet the needs of Derbyshire residents into the future.

“The care home would provide the best care for older people with more complex needs and extra care gives people choice, flexibility, independence and security while having care if and when they need it.”

Residents at the Hazelwood Home for Older People – which would remain open while the new development takes shape – would be given the choice of whether to stay or move to the new facility.
