Lidl gets nod to transform former Waitrose store

The former Waitrose store in Wollaton

A new retail scheme in the Nottingham suburb of Wollaton has been given backing by Nottingham City Council planning chiefs.

Lidl wants to move into part of the former Waitrose supermarket on Trowell Road and let the rest of the space out to fellow retailers. If the plans are passed next Wednesday (19 February), two new units will be built and will be occupied by a bakery and a Post Office. Lidl says a charity shop will also move into the parade of shops.

The proposals met with significant objection by local residents who voiced concerns about anti-social behaviour and those who would prefer a more upmarket supermarket.

The Waitrose supermarket on the site closed in November last year after trading for four years.
