Plans for city centre student scheme get green light

How the new scheme could look

Plans to build a five-storey student accommodation block in Nottingham city centre that could house until 63 bedrooms have been given the green light.

Developer Tariq Mahmood has been given the go to build either a 58- or 63-room scheme with the possibility of retail space on the ground floor on St Marks Street – a stone’s throw away from the intu Victoria shopping centre.

The current derelict buildings on the site will be demolished to make way for the new development.

A planning statement reads: “The proposal will fulfil an economic role by bringing forward the development of a vacant brownfield site and by providing employment during the construction phase.

“It will fulfil an economic and social role by providing accommodation for students who will then make use of local facilities including local shops, public houses, restaurants and hot food takeaways, and leisure facilities.

“It will fulfil an environmental role by improving the appearance of a poor quality site through the erection of a well-designed building which will enhance the appearance of the street scene.”
