Local firms win contract on Broadmarsh public realm scheme

Two local firm have landed the contracts to work on Nottingham’s Broadmarsh public realm project to transform Collin Street in the city centre.

Work is continuing on the project, despite the failed scheme to redevelop the adjacent Broadmarsh shopping centre, which came to a grinding halt when intu fell into administration over the summer.

Subcontractor J McCann & Co is working for principal contractor Thomas Bow, which is owned by Nottingham City Council, on the scheme.

Thomas Bow is delivering the Broadmarsh public realm works, with fellow Nottingham-based firm McCann installing and connecting lighting along Collin Street and north Carrington Street.

Works to install all associated lighting and infrastructure got under way this month with an anticipated 12 month programme through to completion.

McCann’s electrical and technical project manager, Walter Webb, said: “The team at the City Council recognise the value in investing in locally sourced labour and talent – and this commitment is apparent with the delivery of Broadmarsh’s public realm.”

He added “Nottingham has been crying out for a full transformation to its south side for many years and we are incredibly excited and grateful to be delivering this project for our home city. We’re also delighted to be working for a fellow Nottingham firm in Thomas Bow, who we know and have tremendous respect for within the construction industry. We can’t wait to deliver a quality, city-defining public space for the City Council and the people of Nottingham.”

John Allen, major projects director at Thomas Bow, added “We’re delighted to be starting work on site on a project which we have been working for many months through early contractor involvement to develop the design and deliver value for the client.

“We were thrilled that McCanns were successful on this package and look forward to working with them. Through the delivery of this scheme we are also engaging support from other local suppliers, specialist contractors and even Nottingham Trent University to support the development of our programme.”
