Dunelm board member quits in aftermath of Post Office miscarriage of justice

The former Post Office boss at the centre of a miscarriage of justice ruling has quit her position on the board of Leicester homewares giant Dunelm.

Paula Vennells has stepped down as a non-executive director at Dunelm after 39 sub-postmasters had their convictions for theft, fraud and false accounting quashed by the Court of Appeal last Friday (April 23).

In a statement this morning, chairman of Dunelm, Andy Harrison, said: “We respect Paula’s decision to step down from the Board and I would like to thank her for the positive contribution she has made to the business since her appointment in September 2019.”

Vennells was chief executive of the Post Office from 2012 until 2019. The company’s never fully investigated reports that its IT system, Horizon, was faulty, which led to the miscarriage of justice involving hundreds of postmasters.

Vennells also announced she was stepping down from the board of Morrisons this morning.
