Weekender: I’ll be back… for more doughnuts

Project D

The company behind the UK’s first protein doughnut is set to showcase the sweet treat at a multi-sports exhibition attended by some of the biggest names in showbusiness and sport this weekend.

Derby-based Project D manufactures around 48,000 doughnuts per week at its headquarters in Spondon and has grown its team from three to 120 in the space of just four years.

Now, from Friday to Sunday, the firm will be taking up residence at the Arnold Sports Festival at Birmingham NEC, where it will be hoping to grab the attention of some very high-profile names.

With speakers including Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger, former boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and former World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall – who sampled a protein doughnut at last year’s festival – set to appear, the fast-growing business is expecting record sales of its signature product.

Max Poynton, operations director at Project D, said: “We completely sold out of everything last year, every single day. It was a huge event for us.

“We’ve literally been inundated ever since with messages from last year’s attendees asking if ‘we’ll be back’. I’m delighted to say that we will – with even more products than last year, and the biggest event stand we’ve ever built.”

The company will be selling its sugary wares at three stands across the exhibition space.

Poynton added: “The protein doughnuts, in particular, are set to sell like hot cakes! They are the perfect post-show, post-exercise treats for the super-fit men and women that tend to attend this event.

“Although we’re there to sell our product, we’d be delighted to give one or two free ones to Mr Schwarzenegger if he happens to visit our stand!”
