Games Workshop close to signing TV and film deal with online giant

Games Workshop products and characters could be about to hit the big and small screen after the firm signed an agreement in principle with Amazon.

The deal, if progressed, will see Amazon develop the Nottingham firm’s intellectual property into films and television programmes. Games Workshop will also grant Amazon associated merchandising rights.

A statement from Games Workshop said: “In advance of contracts being entered into, Amazon will be commencing certain development activities (such as holding preliminary discussions with writers) in order to facilitate the project. It is intended that rights will initially be granted to develop the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

“Whilst the parties have reached agreement on material commercial terms, the project is wholly dependent on and subject to contracts being agreed and entered into, which the parties are working towards.”

Games Workshop says it has made no change to its forecast for the year ending May 2023.

In July, Games Workshop posted an ‘astonishing’ trading performance in its full year results to 29 May, with its revenue and pre-tax profits both exceeding expectations.

Revenues at the firm rose risen to £414.8m – up from £369.5m last year – while profits before tax have increased from £150.9m to £165.5m.
