Rock City founder passes away aged 94

George Akins Snr, one of the region’s most successful entrepreneurs and the founder of Nottingham’s iconic Rock City venue, has passed away aged 94.
In a statement issued to Nottinghamshire Live, the Akins family said George Snr had left “a fantastic legacy having been one of the last of an era.”
“Growing up as a boy in Sneinton and the Lace Market, attending St Marys school briefly, which is now home to the head office of the business he started and which is now run by his sons Sean and George.
“George leaves behind his wife Ellen, his sons, Sean, George and Alex as well as close family friends who will miss him greatly”, they added.
“He was a force of nature who achieved some incredible things in his long and storied life. He will be missed greatly and leaves some incredible memories for so many.”
Akins founded Rock City in 1980 after making his name with the Geo Akins bookmaking chain and running prominent Nottingham casinos such as the Victoria Club. He also established Bildurn – the property development giant now directed by son Sean.
Rock City has paid tribute to Akins.
A spokesperson for the venue said: “It goes without saying he was instrumental in creating a legendary venue that has become an iconic part of rock and roll history.
“George Snr’s passion for entertainment was infectious, and his vision brought together fans and artists alike from all over the world. He poured his heart and soul into making Rock City the ultimate destination for live music & entertainment in Nottingham, and his legacy will never be forgotten. We want to offer our deepest sympathies to Family & Friends. His memory will live on forever. Rest in peace.”
