In Derby, a new centre has been established to support children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Named Imbue, the gaming and tech learning hub caters to individuals aged 8 to 18 dealing with social, emotional, or mental health needs (SEMH), or facing challenges in mainstream education.

The facility features modern technology that offers activities for learning and skill-building in a safe environment. Sessions will help young people develop skills like coding, digital technology, and media, along with trying out physical activities and immersive experiences.

Imbue has partnered with Derby City Council, and its creation has been made possible through the Council’s application for funding from the Department for Education’s Short Breaks Innovation Fund.

The centre will offer breaks and rest, along with different learning options, after-school clubs, and individual sessions.

The project also uses a mobile app called Includmi for mental health and well-being. This app lets kids with special needs share their feelings and talk to trusted workers and support teams.

Co-founder of Imbue, Simon Leonard said: “The doors to a new way of learning are opening in Derby. This is an inclusive, immersive experience for children that struggle in mainstream education and I don’t think there’s anything like it anywhere else in the country.

“Our aim is to support children to develop their social skills and life skills through a love of gaming and tech. Working in partnership with Derby City Council, we want to inspire young people to grow their potential and set goals for their future.”
