Student accomodation plans for former shopping arcade

A section of a city centre shopping arcade may undergo expansion and conversion into student housing.

Proposals have been made to redevelop West End Arcade, located on Upper Parliament Street in Nottingham.

The plan involves renovating the lower and ground floors, with additional construction to extend the upper floors for accommodation purposes.

Dating back to the 1920s, the shopping arcade is the subject of this redevelopment proposal, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

An application has been submitted to Nottingham City Council outlining the proposed replacement of the shopfront at the Upper Parliament Street entrance and the construction of a new floor to accommodate 23 en-suite bedrooms for students.

The planning documents say: “The design aims to make the best use of available space above the existing retail development, which will be repurposed to its full advantage. The applicant wants to take the opportunity to celebrate his cultural background and create a local ‘landmark’.”
