Plans moving forward for £200m relief road in Lincoln

Lincolnshire County Council is moving forward with the North Hykeham Relief Road, which they describe as the next “link in the chain” around Lincoln.
It will connect the Lincoln Eastern Bypass, opened in December 2020, with the Lincoln Western Bypass, creating a complete ring road around the city.
Following full planning approval in May, council members have agreed to proceed with a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) and a Side Roads Order (SRO).
The project’s estimated cost is around £193.9m, with possible costs ranging from £180.4m to £208.2m.
Funding includes over £110m from the Department for Transport, nearly £74m from Lincolnshire County Council, and £10 million from developer contributions.
The CPOs will allow the council to acquire the necessary land, while the SROs will enable work on existing highways and private roads.
The land covers 191 hectares and includes around 60 separate ownerships, mainly held by about 20 individuals or companies, with some land occupied by agricultural tenants.
Construction is expected to start in late 2025 and finish by late 2028.
