Developer reveals plans for retirement scheme in Leicester
Adlington Retirement Living, known for designing, building, and managing independent retirement communities, has proposed a new development of 96 apartments on the site of the former Mary Gee Halls of Residence in Leicester.
The planned retirement community will feature one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments for individuals aged 60 and over and offering the added benefit of patios or walk-out balconies for all units.
The site on Ratcliffe Road has been empty since its closure in 2018.
Dr Ed Gladman, chief executive of Adlington Retirement Living, said: “Our vision is to empower the older generation to live a long, happy and healthy life. We do this by creating quality retirement communities in safe and secure environments and providing our homeowners with stimulating activities, extensive communal facilities and beautiful private gardens.
“There’s an urgent need to address the shortage of appropriate housing for older people and integrated retirement communities (IRCs) are a very undersupplied part of the market. An Adlington Retirement Living community provides genuinely life-changing homes for those individuals who move in.”
Anne, who moved to an Adlington Retirement Living community in January 2023, said: “It’s the best of both worlds – you have your own home, but you’ve got an added sense of security and you’re not alone. Many of the worries are taken off your shoulders. You no longer have to worry about the structure of your property, about the wellbeing of your building, about looking after the garden. All of those things are taken care of. You still have all your own independence and your own privacy. You have your own front door – your post comes through your own letterbox.
“When I moved in, almost immediately I thought ‘yes, I’ve done the right thing’. I feel so lucky to be here. It’s just wonderful for me. It all worked so well.”
