Forest edge closer to Greek takeover

Evangelos Marinakis

A deal that would see Nottingham Forest change hands is imminent, according to reports this morning.

It is thought that Evangelos Marinakis, the chairman of Greek champions Olympiacos is close to sealing a deal that would make him the major shareholder at Forest, with as much as an 80 per cent share in the club.

The deal will need to be ratified by the Football League, and it is thought that League chiefs have been dicussing the deal this week with a view to give the green light for the deal.

Any takeover will not see Forest’s flamboyant owner Fawaz Al Hasawi leave the club, it is thought. Despite seeking external investment, statements over the past week have seen him reiterate that he would like to remain as Forest’s chairman if the deal goes ahead.

He has said: “I do not want to leave Forest until the right time. I hope that we win promotion and I am the chairman. This is my dream and I do not want to lose that.

“But maybe some investor will come. It will be good for the club, in the end. If the right investor came to the club and they put the right money in the club, it will be good for the club.

“But I will not put my club (in the hands) of just anyone. I want to do due diligence on anyone who we are going to work with.”

Forest are hopeful that their transfer embargo will be lifted in the summer. They finished the 2015-16 season in a disappointing 16th place in the Championship.
