Windermere to get convention centre

ENGLISH Lakes Hotels has announced plans to build a £4m convention centre at its Low Wood hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere.

The hotel group plans to build what it says will be Cumbria’s largest event venue next to the Low Wood hotel by 2012. It is expected to create five full-time jobs and 30 part-time jobs.

Planning permission for a 600-seater venue was originally granted in 2004, but English Lakes Hotels said it will now apply for permission for a new contemporary, environmentally friendly design.

The new centre will have environmental credentials such as a solar powered heating and system ground source heat pumps.

Director Tim Berry said: “We are strongly committed to ensuring this new building fits in with its location at the heart of the Lake District both in terms of its appearance and its impact on the environment. This will be one of the first buildings in the country to be heated by this type of innovative, eco-friendly system.”

English Lakes Hotels also runs the Waterhead Hotel, Storrs Hall Hotel and the Famous Wild Boar Hotel in the Lake District, as well as the Midland Hotel and the Lancaster House Hotel in Lancashire.
