Midas to focus on graduates

MANCHESTER’S inward investment agency Midas is hosting an event to examine the retention of the city’s graduates.

According to Midas some 400,000 students graduate from 22 higher education institutions located within an hour of the city.

The event, at Chancellors Hotel & Conference Centre in Fallowfield on June 10, will highlight and promote opportunities for Manchester’s graduates.

Midas will also focus on its Graduate Retention and Language Skills’ report which has brought together research from a number of universities and inward investors.

The report found that 70% of North West graduates who found jobs stayed in the North West. In addition, Manchester University has the highest number of overseas students in the UK and 18% of the UK’s graduates study within an hour‘s drive of Greater Manchester.

According to the report the North West produces 20% of all UK language graduates and it is the second most popular destination for students, after London.

Colin Sinclair, chief executive of MIDAS, said: “Manchester is in an excellent position to use the huge graduate talent pool as a unique selling point for inward investors – as we are already doing. This report shows that Manchester can do yet more to attract and retain the brightest and the best people with potentially huge economic gains across the whole of the city region.”

The event will also discuss the Understanding Labour Market, Skills and Talent report from the Manchester Independent Economic Review (MIER) – the largest independent economic review to be conducted in Europe.
