Social housing firms star in Best Places survey

SOCIAL housing providers account for nearly half of the 15 North West businesses featured in the top 100 Best Companies to Work For guide.

Those recognised in the annual survey include: Liverpool-based One Vision, which was ranked 4th overall; Burnley-based Calico (6th);  Aston-Under-Lyne’s New Charter Housing Trust Group (16th); Chester and District Housing Trust (27th); the Plus Dane Group of Liverpool (34th); living up to its name comes Manchester’s Great Places Housing Group in 37th and the Harvest Housing Group, also of Manchester, in 42nd place.

The survey rates companies in a number of different ways, ranging from the leadership of the organisation, to a fair deal on pay to personal development, staff well-being and community/corporate giving.

The highest-placed North West company outside the social housing sector was family-owned Lancashire jeweller Beaverbrooks – which was judged the overall winner in 2009 – which came in 17th position.

Tameside-based Inventive Leisure, which operates the Revolution vodka bar chain was ranked 25th overall, up from 34th a year ago.

Salford-based financial services company Think Money Group  – which like Inventive Leisure is private equity owned – comes in at 36th, while Hilti Great Britain, the Manchester-based sales and marketing-based function of the Lichtenstein tool-maker is at 46th.

Outside the top 50, there is Bolton online appliances retailer DRL at 63, Crewe motor dealership business Swansway Group at 70th, Pets at Home in 77th and North West law firm Brabners Chaffe Street at 81.
