Building firm closure causes 75 job losses

ALMOST all of the 75 employees at Liverpool-based Mayfield Construction have been laid off as the firm has entered into administration.
Some 72 of the 75 staff employed at the firm were laid off by directors prior to the appointment of administrators Ernst & Young on July 8. Three members of staff have been retained to help administrators complete the sale of the business’s assets, which are principally understood to be its remaining contracts as most of its plant and construction equipment was hired.
Mayfield Construction was the main trading subsidiary of Glasgow-based McKean Group. It was placed into administration last month alongside its subsidiary, Hudson Vision.
A spokesman for Ernst & Young said that following McKean Group’s collapse, “the directors felt they were unable to continue trading.”
McKean Group separately employed seven members of staff – six were laid off by directors prior to the appointment of administrators.
McKean Group was founded in 1918 as a civils contractors serving the rail industry, but it diversified into construction, utilities, civil engineering, bridges and public realm improvements.
The company remained a family concern and was being run by third-generation family members prior to its collapse.
