BDP bowls on at Old Trafford

BDP is to begin delivery of phases two and three of the £23m redevelopment of Lancashire County Cricket Club’s Old Trafford redevelopment following the club’s recent success in the Court of Appeal.
Phase one was completed in July 2010 with the building of The Point – the 1,000-capacity conference and events venue.
The ‘new’ Old Trafford planned will have a permanent capacity of 15,000 seats (extendable to 25,000 for major matches). It will also have double-tier stands and new, state-of-the-art hospitality facilities. New players and media facilities will also be built, alongside a new indoor cricket school.
and the wider community.
Construction work is expected to begin in autumn 2011, with completion due in 2013, ready for the Ashes series that summer.
Manchester studio chairman Gavin Elliott says, “We have worked very closely with the club to develop the design, which complements and extends the unique ‘post-industrial’ aesthetic already established with The Point.
“We didn’t want to do a poor man’s version of Lord’s with white tents on the top of every building, and perpetuate that romantic notion of cricket on the village green, complete with cycling vicars and warm beer.
“Cricket isn’t like that up here in the north west. It’s more of a blue collar game, there’s a different demographic and a different atmosphere. We wanted our design to reflect that.”
The stadium redevelopment is part of a wider £70m redevelopment of the area led by Ask Developments, which also includes a new 155,000 sq ft Tesco.
