New management company appointed by Cumbrian hotel

The Crown Hotel

A four star hotel in the village of Wetheral, near Carlisle, has appointed specialist hotel management company Providence Hospitality to run the 51 bedroom property.

The Crown Hotel, which also features an AA rosette-winning restaurant, is the eighth UK property to join the Providence Hospitality portfolio and the first on a management-only basis.

Joe Bester, director of Providence Hospitality, said: “I’m excited to be working with The Crown Hotel and to offer a management agreement which leaves ownership of the hotel with the current team.

“With this new approach we can bring all the expertise and experience that we would apply with a traditional purchase, but work alongside the owners and current staff to develop the business collaboratively.”

The Crown Hotel, which is located four miles to the east of Carlisle, was purchased earlier this month by Variegate Properties Limited, when previous owner David Byers retired from the business.

It is a short walk from the River Eden, and features conference and event facilities, a leisure club with 12 metre swimming pool, a gym and a traditional village pub.

All hotel employees will remain in their current positions, headed up by the incumbent general manager Paul Hicks.

Hicks said: “The team and I are looking forward to the next chapter for the Crown Hotel. Together with the new owners and the guidance and expertise of Providence Hospitality, we will work to enhance this already successful business.”

There are seven other UK hotels in the Providence Hospitality portfolio: The Old Quay House Hotel and The Rosevine in Cornwall, Borrowdale Gates Hotel in the Lake District, The Queens Hotel, The Palace Hotel, and The Headland Hotel in Devon and The Northfield Hotel in Somerset.
