Diversification is the key to success

A strategic decision to diversify its workload has helped family-owned Bardsley Construction boost its figures and create a strong order pipeline.

With 50-plus years’ heritage, Bardsley has built solid foundations. The business, headquartered in Tameside and with a regional office in Leeds, increased annual turnover by 33 per cent to £68.3m in 2017.

It also reported a pipeline of secured contracts worth more than £60m with another £12m set to come.

Managing director Paul Strutt said Bardsley continued to benefit from a strategy to spread risk by diversifying across the public sector, student accommodation, private residential, the private rented sector (PRS) and leisure development.

Chairman Roly Bardsley said the firm had benefited from reducing its reliance on affordable housing – partly because that market “remains slow to react to the constant pleading towards the public sector enablers to build more homes”.

Bardsley, which employs 184 staff, is on 13 major delivery frameworks with a total value of billions.

It has won contracts across the North West and Yorkshire, including the appointment by English Cities Fund to construct Riverside House, an 11,000 sq ft Grade A, £5m office development forming part of the wider New Bailey scheme at Salford.

It was also appointed to a £6.2m student accommodation development of 103 studio apartments in Sheffield and a £6.7m contract to refurbish and extend The Joseph Priestley Building at the University of Huddersfield.

Its most recent contract win will see Bardsley deliver a £17m aparthotel in New Cross in Manchester.

The development will provide 224 rooms with reception, cafe and gym and will be operated by Dublin-based Staycity Group. Work has started on site with completion due in December 2019.

Bardsley is already providing a 172-room hotel with gym, café, restaurant, conference and meeting facilities for AC Hotels by Marriot, on a nearby site in the city.
