Malmaison to open new hotel in Manchester city centre

Pearl Assurance House

Manchester city centre is to get a brand new 70-bedroom hotel.

The new hotel, close to Albert Square, will be the latest in a series of openings in the city.

Latest arrivals and planned openings include the Dakota, the Brooklyn and Hotel Indigo near Victoria Station.

The latest scheme involves a 1950s office block.

Pearl Assurance House near Albert Square is a six-storey building with ground floor retail units.

The upper floors were previously used as offices and are currently standing empty.

The scheme has been put together by Greenlane Properties – with a planning statement drawn up by Avison Young.

A design and access statement has been put together by Stephenson Studio and Leach Rhodes Walker as the architect.

The plan is to add an additional level and redesign. A rooftop bar is also included in the scheme.

Malmaison is the proposed operator for the latest addition to the hotel scene in the city.

The planning statement said: “The operator knows and understands the Manchester market well and considers, given their existing occupancy rate at the Piccadilly hotel and wider market insights, that there is further demand for four-star hotels in the city centre.

“The location of Pearl Assurance House meets their location needs.

“The proposed use will complement and generate activity in this area and add to its tourism offer.

“The introduction of a new high quality, well designed hotel which integrates into an active streetscape will only serve to improve the quality of the pedestrian environment in this area of the city centre.”

Once the hotel opens its doors around 85 jobs will be created.
