Builder buys former school site to construct 195 homes

Plans for the former school site

Taylor Wimpey Manchester has completed the purchase of land for the development of 195 new homes at the former Hartshead High School site, off Lees Road, in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The announcement marks the progression of plans for the redevelopment of the site, providing much-needed new homes in Tameside in addition to boosting the local economy.

Planning permission was first granted by Tameside Council in December 2018, and a reserved matters planning application was submitted by Taylor Wimpey Manchester in June 2019.

Preparatory works will begin this month, with homes expected to be on sale from early 2020 with a combination of high-quality one-bedroom apartments, as well as semi-detached and detached style homes ranging from two- to four-bedrooms.

It is anticipated that the new development will create 184 construction and supply jobs per year of build, as well as generating an additional £950,000 for local goods and services as residents move into their new homes.

Publicly accessible open green spaces and pedestrian linkways will also be featured throughout the scheme.

Chloe Dunn, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Manchester, said: “We’re delighted to have successfully completed acquisition of land which will house our newest community in Tameside.

“These new homes will be ideally positioned for access to a range of local shops and services, as well as being within the catchment area of ‘outstanding’ Ofsted-rated primary and secondary schools, making it a much sought-after location.

“It also provides a fantastic outlook towards Hartshead Pike, Pennine Way and the fairways of Ashton Golf Course.”
