Demolition work starts on former Stockport M&S site

Work has now started on Stockport’s former Marks & Spencer building at Merseyway Shopping Centre following the appointment of Austin Wilkinson Demolition (AWD).

The AWD team is on site clearing and preparing the building for the main works programme which will be delivered through 2020.

The 80,551 sq ft building was acquired by developer Glenbrook earlier in October after M&S closed its doors in April 2018.

Glenbrook, working with a professional design team including AEW architects and Incognito, is under way with finalising plans to transform the building into office, leisure and retail use under a distinctive new brand which will be launched early next year.

Chris Lloyd, investment director at Glenbrook, said: “We pledged to make a quick start on site following our acquisition of the building and we are pleased that AWD are now in place and that the strip-out has commenced before the end of the year.

“This is the first step towards the re-positioning and re-energising the building.”
