Surge in home care demand puts family firm on course for record turnover

Rising demand for home care has put a Southport provider on course for record turnover, having substantially added to its headcount since the coronavirus lockdown was introduced.

Alcedo Care has experienced a significant increase in demand for its services during April, May and June, with many clients across the region requiring more support.

It recruited 70 team members in April, and 60 in May, increasing its workforce by more than 30% and takings its total staffing to more than 400.

The company, run by husband and wife team Andy and Jo Boardman, is now forecasting it will beat its predicted £10m turnover by the end of this calendar year.

Family-run Alcedo was only established three years ago, in March 2017.

Since then it has expanded strategically and at a steady pace, gradually opening offices in Blackpool and Wigan.

The coronavirus pandemic has fast-forwarded its expansion plans, with the company now looking to open offices in Preston in the near future and actively looking for a suitable site in Liverpool, which will open later this year.

Having experienced a record quarter, the group now forecasts a turnover of £10m by the end of 2020, up 150% on last year, delivering a total of 500,000 hours of care, support and nursing services to people in their own homes.

Managing director Andy Boardman said: “From companionship to 24/7 complex care live-in support, the desire to keep loved ones safe and well in their own homes during lockdown increased significantly, and as a result we recruited 130 new team members in April and May, achieving record financial results.

“With an ever-increasing ageing population in the UK, with 3.2 million aged 80 and over and 1.6 million aged 85 and over, many naturally require a degree of help at home.

“The recent coronavirus pandemic has, without doubt, heightened the demand for high-quality care for people in their own homes, and we are committed to delivering the necessary services across the North West, with further growth planned for this year, and future expansion plans in the pipeline for 2021.”
