Proposals submitted for central Stockport redevelopment projects

Part of the proposals

Family-run property company, Hall & Co, has submitted proposals for the redevelopment of four key sites within Stockport’s popular Underbanks.

An important component of the ongoing regeneration of the town centre, the masterplan will restore the town’s historic heart to its former glory.

The project is Hall & Co’s second in central Stockport following the transformation of the Grade II-listed Bank Chambers, now home to ProFolk, the town’s first dedicated co-working space.

In a painstaking project, Hall & Co restored the building’s beautiful original features, including stained glass, marble columns, bank vaults and fireplaces.

Now, the Underbanks will see its own transformation, supported by a multimillion-pound investment by Stockport Council.

Hall & Co has worked closely with the council to ensure that its proposals reflect the character of the area and sit comfortably alongside its existing heritage assets.

The council recently brought forward the award-winning White Lion, while several public realm and highway improvements are currently under way.

The vacant sites will be completely redeveloped to create four new buildings.

Each will feature unique ground floor spaces aimed at innovative independents and start-ups, including co-working space to expand and evolve the ProFolk brand. The upper levels will provide dual aspect living around lush green, semi-private courtyards.

Each of the upper floor apartments will be designed to the ‘HAPPI’ design principles, with Winter gardens that can function as a balcony, dining space or home office in a post-COVID world.

Communal roof gardens will provide space for events, relaxing or admiring the view of the historic rooftops and views beyond.

Matt Ollier of Ollier Smurthwaite Architects explained that the proposals have been designed to fit seamlessly into the existing urban grain, reimagining the stepped period townhouses which are unique to the area.

Jamie Hall, project director at Hall & Co Property, said: “Stockport has seen significant investment in recent months and the regeneration of the Underbanks is an important part of that wider picture.

“It’s home to an eclectic mix of independents and has a lot of historical significance, which has made it a popular destination.

“The sites we’ll be redeveloping are all under-used and in need of extensive redevelopment – the works will improve the area aesthetically while helping to encourage footfall. It’s fantastic to be able to invest further in Stockport, supporting a thriving town centre.”

The Underbanks continues to grow in popularity, driven by the sensitive restoration of several properties which are now home to a diverse range of independents including the Produce Hall, Where The Light Gets In, Project 53, The Angel Inn, The Cracked Actor, Glass Spider and the Good Rebel.

Hall & Co was advised by Broadgrove Planning & Development and Primas Law.
